Floral Styling Tips

Your wedding florals play an important role in your wedding day, and as the beautiful arrangements make up a huge part in your styling and colour scheme it’s important to not look over them. Your florals will set the ‘vibe’ and tone of your wedding day, they will add drama and elegance to the overall look and feel you’re hoping to emulate, and depending on the concept you’re trying to achieve they can also take a up a large portion of your wedding budget!

Before the extensive quoting process can begin, let’s break down some important info your florist needs to know and the reasons why. Having this information ready makes the quoting process a breeze, and one less thing to take up your all-important time!

Let’s take a look:

  • The date of your wedding
  • The venue location
  • Your chosen colour palette
  • Any absolute must have flowers, and any absolutely not flowers..
  • Statement pieces
  • Your floral styling budget

1. Wedding Date

“Why do I need a wedding date when I am just looking for pricing?” I hear you say!

Well, there’s good reason for this, as floral quotes can take days if not weeks to put together. Firstly, having your wedding date selected tells us whether we are available or not for your wedding date (there is no point in us spending hours and hours with you going back and forth on your floral styling quote only for you to find out that we aren’t actually available for your date – what a head spin!)

Two, it also determines the types of florals, and foliage that are likely to be in season at that time of the year, as again there’s no point in us creating your concept around Peonies if you are having a March wedding (unless you’re happy to utilise real touch silk florals of course!)

2. Venue Location

“If I have a date locked in, does it really matter if I don’t have my venue yet?”

Absolutely, and here’s why – We need to know the venue location so that we can check our availability for you, there’s no point us telling you we are available for your date if your weddings on Mars and we will be on Venus!
We also have to consider travel time, staffing and check prior bookings before saying ‘yes’ we are available! Florists may also need to include travel charges in your quote also, so it’s important for us to have this information from the get-go!

Venues also often provide the tables to be used at your reception, and what kind of tables (rectangular, round or perhaps a mix of both) will determine the layout of your reception space.

How many of each will you need to cater for you guest count?

Remember, the number of tables = number of potential centrepieces needed!

3. Colour Palette

This one’s absolutely crucial!

Yes, white will go with anything and everything and is a timeless classic which we all love, however if for example you’re having lilac bridesmaids dresses then it’s likely you’ll want that reflected in your floral styling too to keep the theme.

Do you have to go all in on in? Hell no! Maybe you just want some soft touches of it added in amongst white or a range of colours that gel well.

That’s where the professionals come in – we will create a quote using a range of specific blooms that will flow from your bridesmaids dresses to your bouquet, your ceremony space and through to you reception area and centrepieces!

Our recommendation? Have your Pinterest board link handy! Send us all of that juicy inspo you’ve been hoarding, and then we can start to narrow down on things and create a vision for your big day!

4. Yay’s and Nay’s

Do you absolutely hate the look of Natives, dried flowers, roses or ‘gyp’ aka babies breath?

We want to know!

You don’t have to be an absolute flower God and know all of the floral and foliage names – a simple photo will do the trick!

Or maybe, you have allergies and are allergic to pollen and therefor only certain types of floral varieties can be used – if you don’t tell us we can’t help with making the best suggestions to suit your wants and needs.

5. Statement Pieces

This one will truly depend on your overall budget, however it is a good place to help you get started!

Consider what floral elements are of the most importance to you, is it your bouquets, your buttonholes, your centrepieces or your ceremony floral arrangements?

Maybe your budget allows for an overhead install and that’s what’s most important to you!

Whatever you decide start gathering that Pinterest inspo BABY, and let your floral stylist know which pieces are the most importance to you and why. That way when we start to put together your floral styling quote we will have a really good understanding about what’s most important to you, and we can do our best to reflect this in your quote!

6. Budget

Have you started your wedding planning already, and already feel like you’ve been asked this question A MILLION TIMES!?

The Wedding Planner in me says, “If your vendor isn’t asking you this question then they should be!”

Your wedding budget plays such a huge part of your wedding day – it’s what sets the scene really and determines whether you will be getting married on the beach, with an arbour, two witnesses and a celebrant, or if you will be having a custom made black wedding dress, surrounded by a million to one white import roses like Christine Quinn (from Netflix’s ever popular Selling Sunset series) and millionaire beau Christian Richard’s wedding, which really did have ‘no budget’ meaning if I want it – I’ll get it kind of mentality!

I won’t go too deep into your wedding budget here (although I could easily). What I will do however, is try to keep this centred more so around your floral styling budget (Warning – Boring numbers ahead!)

  • As a guide you should consider allocating 10-15% of your wedding budget to your floral styling.
  • If you’re wanting a Pinterest worthy wedding with an abundance of florals, then we recommend 20-25% of your wedding budget is allocated to your floral styling.

Most couples tend to spend between of $3,500 – $6,500 on their wedding floral styling, with some floral stylists also offering styling packages to assist with the set-up styling and hire of your wedding day.

So, what are you waiting for!

Use this advice to your advantage and get started on creating your Pinterest wedding boards today, we recommend creating the following boards to get you started!

  • Wedding Dresses
  • Bridesmaids Dresses
  • Wedding Florals
  • Wedding Cake
  • Wedding Make-up
