8 Social Media Mistakes to AVOID at a Wedding

Wedding Planning Tips

In an age where everyone’s got a camera in their pocket, it’s easy to forget that a wedding is a private event first and a photo opportunity second.

As you get ready to celebrate your big day, here’s a quick and friendly guide to ensure your guests’ social media activity enhances the day for you, rather than creating an awkward situation! You can let your wedding celebrant or MC know and they can make the “unplugged wedding” announcement on your behalf.

If you’re a guest reading this, being mindful of these common 8 social media mistakes will ensure you’re being both respectful and present:

1. Ignoring the Couple’s Wishes (The Ultimate Faux Pas)

If the invitation, wedding website, or signs at the venue request an “unplugged ceremony” or ask that you wait to post photos, respect it. No exception. This is the single most important rule.

2. Posting Before the Couple Does

Never be the first to announce the wedding has happened or share the first photo of the newlyweds. The couple has earned the right to share their news and their professional photos on their own timeline. Wait until they’ve posted first.

3. Blocking the Professional Photographer

During the ceremony or key moments like the first dance, resist the urge to jump into the aisle, lean out, or hold your phone high. You’re blocking the shot the couple paid a wedding professional to capture.

It’s a great opportunity to put your phone away and stay seated to fully experience the moment.

4. Revealing the Dress or Venue Secrets

If you see the bride or the décor before the ceremony begins, don’t post the photos. You may be tempted to do so but don’t do it. Spoilers ruin the magic and the grand reveal the couple has planned.

5. Live Streaming the Ceremony

Unless the couple has specifically requested you do so for guests who can’t attend, don’t live stream any part of the wedding. It’s a private and intimate event, not a public broadcast.

6. Sharing Unflattering or Embarrassing Photos

Even if you think a blurry dancing shot or a mid-meal photo of a guest is funny, it could be hurtful or unprofessional to the person in the photo. Always ensure any photo you post is flattering to the couple and other guests, and avoid posting drunken selfies.

7. Over-Posting or Treating the Day Like Your Own Feed

It’s okay to post a few highlights, but avoid creating 30+ Instagram stories that document every single minute. Be present. Save the majority of your photos for a private memory album and let the day be about connection, not content creation.

8. Making Your Own Big Announcement

The wedding day is exclusively about the couple getting married. This goes without saying but don’t use the occasion to announce your own engagement, pregnancy, or other major personal news. Wait until the next day, or even a few days later, to share your joy.

The simplest rule of thumb is this: When in doubt, don’t post it.

Your friends and family are thrilled you’re there to celebrate with them! The best thing you can do is put your phone down and be an active, happy participant on their special day.

Hope that was helpful to you. Are you having an unplugged wedding? Let us know how you’re implementing it in the comments below.

Best,
Melanie Jane
